Foster Family Answers

1.  How do we become a foster family?

Simply fill out the application on the website (puglover.petfinder.com) and email it in or fax it in to

479-872-7632.  We will check your references and call and talk to you about fostering.  You are put on a list and the next pug we get in which we think you might enjoy fostering we give you a call.  At that time you can say – yes or no.  You are not under contract to take them.  Some families are more able to handle certain habits and energy levels of a pug than others – we try to make it enjoyable for you and the pug.

2.  It is only me – I don’t have anyone living with me – can I still foster?

YES  - many times this is the type of situation a dog needs.  Someone who might have a little more time to spend with them while they are adapting to living in a home situation instead of a kennel situation or someone who can make them feel special after loosing their original family.  Someone who enjoys the company and the warmth of being touched by a pug.  Someone with patience.

3.  I do not have a fenced yard – can I still foster?

This is a question which needs consideration.  If you are willing to take the dog out to do their business on a leash and not free run.  Yes.  However, this must be done several times a day.  This is the commitment you have to be willing to make.

4.  I have a cat – can I still foster?

If the cat is declawed – you can foster.  A cat will typically hit a dogs nose (even in play) but since a pug has no nose  which sticks out – the eyes are in line of fire and with their eyes sticking out – it is a definite problem.  Only fosters with cats who are declawed are approved.  We try to find a pug who doesn’t drive the cat crazy.

5.  With today’s economy – I can afford to feed and house a dog – I can’t afford the medical bills – can I foster?

As long as the pug is in foster care – Pug Rescue of NWA will take care of all medical costs.  However you must contact us before taking them to a vet and we must approve the visit.  We keep our pug’s medical records as complete as possible and that usually requires using one vet for their medical needs.  At this time we have a sponsor who will furnish flea and tick medicine and heartworm medicine.

6.  What if I fall in love with the pug and want to adopt it?

Our foster families have first option to adopt a pug they are fostering.  If you are fostering a pug and decide they are a perfect fit for your family.  We ask you let us know before we have committed the dog to an applicant.  We want to make everyone happy.  When you adopt it – all future medical bills become your responsibility.

7.  What am I allowed to do with a foster pug?

We hope you will treat it as a member of your family.  Socializing them with family and friends is encouraged.  Leting them experience children and other dogs, cats, and animals is encouraged as long as it is supervised until you know it is ok.

8.  Do I have a say in who can adopt a pug I foster?

We normally ask our foster families to give reports once a week in the first 4 weeks they have them and then once a month thereafter.  The foster families input is very important in placing them with the right family.  We often ask the foster family what they think of a family situation where their pug is to be placed.

9.  What does it cost to foster a pug – do I get paid?

All fosters are volunteers – no payment is made to the foster family.  The cost of fostering a pug is limited to the daily care of the pug – food – housing – love.  If you are out of town for more than one or two days on vacation – we will try and find someone to do a sleepover until you get back.

10.  I want to be a foster family – what do I do?

Complete a foster family application available at puglover.petfinder.com and at events we attend.
